Through the year, this quintet of performers presents “This Programme Is Morally Good”, the story of The Carter Family. As Winter rolls around, they cast their net a little wider along America’s Eastern mountain chain. This seasonal show explores the music and customs of what Ralph Stanley has called “the birthground of American folk music.”
Let the Appalachian Xmas Show take you somewhere both strange and familiar, fondly remembered and long forgotten:-
Between 1927 and 1943 The Carter Family recorded over 300 sides which established their reputation as the founding family of American roots music. As Bob Dylan has remarked, without them, popular music as we know it today would not have been possible.
Taking as its title the promotional line which A.P Carter used to publicise the group, This Programme Is Morally Good, the show celebrates the music which they brought down from the mountain and have given to the whole of America.
Their songs include Keep On The Sunny Side, Can The Circle Be Unbroken?, Wildwood Flower, Hello Stranger and You’re Been A Friend To Me.
In the show, Alan, Lynda, and Mike & Helen perform many of the Carters’ best known songs, as well as some neglected gems from their repertoire, while Nigel Schofield tells their story, which encompasses groundbreaking commercial success and self-destructive personal scandal.
