The Songs of the Carter Family

Between 1927 and 1943 The Carter Family recorded over 300 sides which established their reputation as the founding family of American roots music. As Bob Dylan has remarked, without them, popular music as we know it today would not have been possible.

Taking as its title the promotional line which A.P Carter used to publicise the group, this show celebrates the music which they brought down from the mountain and have given to the whole of America.

Their songs include Keep On The Sunny Side, Can The Circle Be Unbroken?, Wildwood Flower, Hello Stranger and You’re Been A Friend To Me.

In the show, Alan, Lynda, and Mike & Helen perform many of the Carters’ best known songs, as well as some neglected gems from their repertoire, while Nigel Schofield tells their story, which encompasses groundbreaking commercial success and self-destructive personal scandal.
